Maharashtra Declares Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav State Festival

The Maharashtra government has officially declared Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav as the state festival. This announcement marks the festival’s deep roots in social unity, nationalism, and cultural pride. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving and promoting this tradition across Maharashtra and beyond.

Historical Significance of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav

Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav was initiated by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893. It was designed to unite people during British rule and encourage a spirit of freedom and self-respect. The festival symbolises Maharashtra’s cultural identity and pride in its language. This tradition continues to inspire social cohesion and patriotism.

Government Support and Policy Changes

The government removed obstacles to the festival’s celebration. Earlier restrictions on Plaster of Paris (POP) idols, imposed due to environmental concerns, were reconsidered. A balanced approach was adopted after a detailed study by the Kakodkar Committee under the Rajiv Gandhi Science Commission.

Environmental and Cultural Balance

The Kakodkar Committee’s findings, approved by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, led to lifting bans on POP idols. The government now permits their making, displaying, and selling. This move reflects a pragmatic balance between tradition and environmental responsibility. Authorities encourage eco-friendly practices alongside cultural celebrations.

Infrastructure and Security Measures

The Maharashtra government has pledged to support the festival with adequate police security and infrastructure. Financial assistance will be provided for grand celebrations in major cities like Mumbai and Pune. This ensures smooth and safe festivities for millions of participants.

Thematic Focus for Festivities

Ganpati Mandals are urged to incorporate themes that honour the Armed Forces, show social initiatives, and showcase national development. Themes such as Operation Sindoor and tributes to great leaders are encouraged. The festival aims to blend social consciousness with joyous celebration.

Timing and Celebration

Ganesh Chaturthi in 2025 is set for 26 August. The festival will be celebrated with renewed vigour, reflecting Maharashtra’s cultural pride and unity. The state’s declaration as a festival puts stress on its importance in Maharashtra’s social and cultural fabric.
