Lucknow Launches First Animal Birth Control Training Centre

The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has recently inaugurated India’s first dedicated Animal Birth Control (ABC) Training Centre in Jarhara. This initiative aims to enhance the management and sterilisation of street dogs across the city and beyond. The centre is a collaborative effort between the LMC, the Animal Welfare Board of India, the Uttar Pradesh government, and Humane World for Animals India. It marks step towards humane and effective control of stray dog populations.
Purpose and Objectives
The ABC Training Centre is designed to strengthen street dog sterilisation programmes. It seeks to improve the skills of veterinarians, para-veterinarians, animal handlers, and organisations involved in dog population management. The centre focuses on all stages of the ABC process, not just surgical sterilisation. This holistic approach aims to ensure animal welfare and public safety.
Training Curriculum
The centre offers a 15-day training programme combining theory and practical sessions. Topics include dog handling, anaesthesia, sterilisation techniques, and post-operative care. This comprehensive training ensures professionals are well-equipped to conduct humane and effective sterilisation. Certification is awarded upon successful completion, enhancing professional credibility.
Eligibility and Fees
The training is open to veterinarians, para-veterinarians, and animal handlers. Fees vary by category – Rs 5,000 for veterinarians, Rs 1,500 for para-veterinarians, and Rs 1,000 for animal handlers. Interested candidates can apply through the LMC’s official website. The first training session is scheduled to begin in November.
Significance and Future Prospects
Dr Piyush Patel of Humane World for Animals brought into light that the centre aims to be a national hub for ABC training. The initiative promotes humane treatment of street dogs while ensuring community safety. LMC’s Animal Welfare Officer Dr Abhinav Verma stated the centre reflects the corporation’s commitment to coordinated and safe sterilisation efforts. The model is expected to inspire similar centres in other cities.
