Know Your Vehicle (KYV) Verification Becomes Mandatory For FASTag Users
Starting October 31, vehicle owners across India must complete the government’s new Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification to continue using FASTag at toll plazas. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) introduced this step to prevent misuse, ensure transparency, and strengthen the digital toll payment system. However, many motorists have expressed concern over the new compliance requirement.
Mandatory KYV For Continued FASTag Use
Under the new directive, all vehicle owners are required to complete the KYV process to keep their FASTag active. Those failing to do so will find their tags deactivated, forcing them to pay tolls manually in cash. This rule applies irrespective of the issuing bank or payment platform.
Reasons Behind KYV Implementation
NHAI and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) discovered several instances of misuse, including people carrying loose tags in wallets, using the same tag across multiple vehicles, and attaching car tags to larger vehicles like trucks to pay lower tolls. The KYV process aims to ensure that each FASTag is linked correctly to its registered vehicle, enhancing toll categorisation accuracy.
Documents And Verification Procedure
To complete KYV, users must upload their vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) showing the registration number and owner’s name, valid ID proof such as Aadhaar, PAN, or passport, and in some cases, a recent photograph of the user. Certain vehicle categories also require front and side images showing the number plate and FASTag placement. The verification can be completed through the issuing bank’s website or mobile app under the ‘Update KYV’ or ‘Know Your Vehicle’ option.
Exam Oriented Facts
- KYV stands for Know Your Vehicle, a new verification system for FASTag users.
- From October 31, 2025, KYV is compulsory for all vehicles to continue using FASTag.
- The verification can be completed through the user’s bank or FASTag provider’s mobile app.
- Unverified FASTags will be deactivated, even with sufficient account balance.
Impact And Long-Term Benefits
NHAI has already begun deactivating unverified FASTags, with reports of some vehicles being stopped at toll plazas. Despite technical complaints, the system aims to eliminate tag misuse, facilitate tracking of stolen or sold vehicles, and improve toll data transparency. Once verified, the FASTag status will display as “Active and Verified”, ensuring smoother travel and a cleaner digital toll ecosystem for the future.
