International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace

On the 24th of April, the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace is observed around the planet. This day acknowledges the usage of multilateral diplomacy and decision-making to achieve peaceful resolutions of conflicts among the countries.

Importance of this day

This day is very important as it promotes international peace and an end of wars in the world through the use of international agreements, diplomacy, and multilateral mechanisms.

History of this day

This day was first proclaimed by the UN Assembly while taking into consideration that preserving the values of international cooperation and multilateralism is fundamental for the promotion and support of the three pillars of the UN that are:

  • Peace and Security
  • Development
  • Human Rights.

This day reaffirms the UN Charter and its principles to resolve disputes among the countries of the world through peaceful means. This day was first observed in the year 2019 after it was established in 2018.

Aim of the day

This day has the aim of generating and spreading knowledge about the advantages of diplomacy and multilateralism for peace, including raising activities through public and educational awareness. Another objective of this day is to promote the United Nations’ principle aim of saving future generations from the hardships of war and achieving this through dispute settlements in peaceful manner.
