India’s Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project
The foundation stone for the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (MBRAPP) was recently laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This major nuclear power plant in Rajasthan marks step in India’s energy sector. The project is expected to enhance clean energy production and support economic growth in the region.
Project Overview and Investment
MBRAPP involves an investment of around ₹42,000 crore. It will be one of India’s largest nuclear power plants. The plant will have four indigenous 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) with advanced safety features. These reactors are known as IPHWR 700 and have been designed by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). The project aims to supply reliable base-load power to Rajasthan and neighbouring states.
Fleet Mode Initiative
MBRAPP is part of India’s fleet mode approach to nuclear power. This strategy involves building ten identical 700 MW reactors across the country. Three reactors under this plan have already been commissioned. The fleet mode approach helps reduce costs, speeds up construction, and consolidates operational expertise. It also aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by promoting self-reliance in nuclear technology.
Joint Development and Collaboration
The project is developed by Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam (ASHVINI) through a joint venture between NPCIL (51%) and NTPC Limited (49%). This partnership combines financial strength, technical know-how, and project management skills. The collaboration is expected to ensure smooth implementation and efficient operation of the plant.
Economic and Social Impact
MBRAPP will generate clean and affordable electricity, supporting Rajasthan’s energy needs. It will create direct and indirect employment opportunities. The project is expected to stimulate local businesses, industries, and overall economic growth. It will also strengthen energy security and contribute to sustainable development in the region.
Renewable Energy Boost – Nokh Solar Park
Alongside the nuclear project, the Prime Minister inaugurated the RSDCL Nokh Solar Park in Phalodi, Rajasthan. This 925 MW solar power facility includes 735 MW developed by NTPC. The solar park will add renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions. It will also generate thousands of jobs and support India’s clean energy goals.
