India’s First Equine Disease-Free Compartment

India achieved a landmark in animal health by securing global recognition for its first Equine Disease-Free Compartment (EDFC). On 3rd July 2025, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) approved the facility at the Remount Veterinary Corps (RVC) Centre & College, Meerut Cantonment, Uttar Pradesh. This recognition enables Indian sport horses to participate in international competitions with assured health standards. It marks a major advancement in India’s biosecurity and animal trade systems.
What Is an Equine Disease-Free Compartment?
An EDFC is a scientifically managed zone where horses are maintained free from specific infectious diseases. It operates under strict biosecurity protocols and veterinary surveillance. The compartment ensures a defined sub-population of animals with a verified health status. This model follows the WOAH Terrestrial Animal Health Code which guides compartmentalisation for animal health safety.
Location and Recognition
The first Indian EDFC is established at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre & College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. It is officially recognised by WOAH, the global authority on animal health standards. This approval confirms compliance with international norms and opens doors for Indian horses in global trade and sports.
Disease-Free Status and Biosecurity Measures
The compartment is declared free from Equine Infectious Anaemia, Equine Influenza, Equine Piroplasmosis, Glanders, and Surra. India has also remained free from African Horse Sickness since 2014. The facility follows comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures covering hygiene, pest control, sanitation, waste management, and continuous health monitoring. Veterinary teams conduct 24/7 surveillance to detect and contain any infection promptly.
Impact on International Trade and Sports
This recognition allows Indian sport horses to travel abroad for competitions, boosting India’s presence in the global equestrian arena. It supports breeding, high-value equine trade, and promotes equestrian sports development within the country. The EDFC enhances India’s export readiness by assuring global buyers of animal health safety.
Collaborative Efforts and Institutional Support
The achievement results from coordination between the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the Directorate of Remount Veterinary Services under the Ministry of Defence, the Equestrian Federation of India, and the Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department. Their joint efforts ensure adherence to international standards and effective compartment management.
Extension to Other Animal Sectors
India is applying the compartmentalisation approach to the poultry sector as well. The development of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)-Free Compartments aims to facilitate safe poultry exports. This reflects a broader national strategy to strengthen biosecurity, enhance animal health systems, and promote safe international trade.
