India Marks World Cerebral Palsy Day with Inclusive Events

The year 2025 saw a nationwide observance of World Cerebral Palsy Day led by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. Various National Institutes and Composite Regional Centres (CRCs) organised inclusive events to raise awareness about Cerebral Palsy (CP). These programmes brought into light the challenges faced by persons with CP and celebrated their resilience and determination.
About Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy is a group of neurological disorders affecting movement, balance, and posture. It results from abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain. CP is the most common motor disability in children. Symptoms vary widely, affecting muscle control and coordination differently in each individual.
National Institutes’ Role in Awareness
Institutes like Swami Vivekanand National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTAR), Odisha, and the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), Kolkata, lead awareness initiatives. SVNIRTAR organised physical activities such as a Walking Competition and Throw and Target Ball Game for children with CP, promoting their courage. NILD held a Sit and Draw Competition and cultural programmes, engaging over 100 participants including patients and families.
Empowering Families and Caregivers
The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), Chennai, focused on educating parents of children with CP and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The sessions provided practical guidance and information to empower caregivers in managing disabilities effectively.
Composite Regional Centres’ Contributions
CRCs across India conducted awareness sessions emphasising early intervention and community participation. CRC Tripura brought into light the importance of timely diagnosis and support. CRC Nellore focused on mental health and the role of early intervention. CRC Bhopal combined the observance of World Cerebral Palsy Day with Mental Health Week, sensitising students and teachers through interactive expert-led sessions.
Government Commitment to Inclusion
These collective efforts by DEPwD and associated institutions reflect a strong government commitment to disability inclusion. The programmes aim to improve public understanding, reduce stigma, and promote empowerment of persons with CP and their families. The inclusive celebrations demonstrate a growing recognition of the rights and potential of persons with disabilities in Indian society.
