India Elected as Member of Codex Alimentarius Commission Executive Committee

India has achieved a significant milestone by being unanimously elected as a member representing the Asian region in the Executive Committee of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). This development took place during the 46th meeting held at the FAO Headquarters in Rome.

Executive Committee’s Role

The Executive Committee serves as a vital arm of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, and member countries attach considerable importance to securing its membership. India’s representation in this committee provides a unique opportunity to contribute significantly to the international standard-setting process for various food product categories. Moreover, India will actively participate in the decision-making process related to the Commission’s program of standards development.

Executive Committee’s Functions

The Executive Committee plays a crucial role in managing the Commission’s standards development program. It conducts a “critical review” of proposals to undertake work and monitors the progress of standards development. The committee comprises the Chair, three vice Chairs, six regional coordinators, and seven elected representatives from various geographical regions of Codex.

India’s Initiative for Millet Standards

India’s proposal for setting up group standards for millets was not only accepted by the Commission but also received acknowledgment and support from member countries. The initiative aims to establish global standards for millets, contributing to the broader efforts in ensuring food safety and quality.

India presented its proposal for global standards for millets under the Additional Agendas category during the CAC meeting on November 27, 2023. After extensive deliberations on November 30, the Commission approved the preparation of three Project documents to move forward with the initiative.
