Government Approves ₹5,500 Crore Projects Under Electronics Manufacturing Component Scheme
In a significant boost to India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem, the Government of India has approved the first batch of seven projects worth ₹5,532 crore under the Electronics Manufacturing Component Scheme (EMCS). The projects are expected to generate production worth ₹36,559 crore and create more than 5,100 direct jobs across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
India Steps Into Component and Material Manufacturing
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the approved projects mark India’s shift from assembling finished products to manufacturing critical electronic modules, components, and materials. The new units will produce Multi-Layer and High-Density Interconnect (HDI) Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), Camera Modules, Copper Clad Laminates (CCL), and Polypropylene Films — components previously dependent on imports.
Domestic Demand and Export Potential
According to the minister, these projects will help meet 100% of India’s demand for Copper Clad Laminates, 20% for PCBs, and 15% for Camera Modules. Moreover, around 60% of the total production from these facilities is projected to be exported, strengthening India’s position in global electronics supply chains. The initiative is also expected to reduce import dependence and promote self-reliance in strategic sectors such as defence, telecom, and renewable energy.
Industrial Footprint and Sectoral Reach
Of the seven approved units, five will be located in Tamil Nadu, one in Andhra Pradesh, and one in Madhya Pradesh, reflecting the government’s focus on balanced regional industrial development. The components manufactured will serve diverse industries — from consumer electronics and automotive systems to information and communication technology, robotics, and medical devices.
Exam Oriented Facts
- Total investment approved: ₹5,532 crore across seven projects.
- Estimated production value: ₹36,559 crore with 5,100 direct jobs.
- States covered: Tamil Nadu (5 units), Andhra Pradesh (1), Madhya Pradesh (1).
- 60% of output to be exported, meeting major domestic demand for PCBs and camera modules.
Strategic Impact and Future Outlook
The EMCS initiative complements other key government programmes such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) and India Semiconductor Mission (ISM). By establishing domestic manufacturing capacity for core electronic materials and components, India aims to evolve into a “product nation” — capable of designing, developing, and exporting end-to-end electronic systems. These projects are expected to build trusted supply chains, foster high-skill employment, and position India as a global hub for advanced electronics manufacturing.
