FSSAI Bans ‘ORS’ Label on Food Products
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned the use of the term ‘ORS’ on food labels and advertisements, deeming it misleading to consumers. The regulator has instructed food business operators to comply immediately, citing violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The decision withdraws previous permissions and emphasises strict adherence to labelling standards.
FSSAI’s Directive
The FSSAI has prohibited the use of ‘ORS’ (Oral Rehydration Solution) in food product labelling and advertisements. This decision follows a review which concluded that such usage misleads consumers. The term ‘ORS’ must be removed from all food products, whether used alone or with prefixes/suffixes, as it contravenes the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Previous Permissions Withdrawn
Earlier directives from July 2022 and February 2024 allowed the use of ‘ORS’ on food labels with a disclaimer. However, these permissions have now been revoked. The FSSAI identified the practice as misleading and in violation of the Act, leading to its classification as misbranding, which is punishable under the FSSAI Act 2006.

About ORS
Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) is a medically formulated solution used to prevent and treat dehydration, especially due to diarrhoea. It typically contains a precise mixture of salts and sugars to promote water absorption in the intestines. ORS is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is crucial in managing dehydration in both adults and children.
