President Trump threats to close Mexico border next week
The President of United States of America, Donald Trump has reiterated his threat that he will shut down the southern border of US with Mexico or huge sections of it if the latter does not put an end to passage of undocumented immigrants across the border with immediate effect.
The President clearly stated that the move will mean that all trade with Mexico will be put to a complete stop for a long time. Trump had earlier written a tweet on Friday, “If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United states through our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week. This would be so easy for Mexico to do, but they just take our money and ‘talk’.
President Trump has issued such warnings in the past as well. It was in last December when Trump had threatened to seal the entire border along US-Mexico if the US Congress failed to pass billions of dollars in funding the border wall which was a prime election promise he had made to his voters. He insisted on the same and allowed the governmental shutdown for 35 days instead of budging from his position.
It is said that the threat will leave many Mexican leaders and other business owners angry on both the sides of the border. The White House, however, made no comments and did not respond to any questions put up by the Press which asked if the border closure as indicated by the President will apply to commercial and air travel as well. Any such move will have a profound impact on the cross-border communities stretching from San Diego to southern parts of Texas. It will also impact supermarkets, factories and many other businesses across US which are dependent on trade from Mexico. Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard said in a responding tweet, “Mexico does not act on the basis of threats. We are a great neighbour [Ask] the million and a half Americans who chose our country as their home, the largest community of [Americans] outside the US. For them we are also the best neighbour they could have.”
Experts have stated that the threat is not to be taken very seriously as it is not possible for anyone in the US administration to go ahead and seal all points of entry as that will cost many US businesses billions of dollars. President Trump’s tweet has actually followed the declaration by the Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador that his country was doing all it can to fight against migrant smuggling.
