The Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Semicon India Conference-2022 in Bengaluru.  The consumption of semiconductors is expected to cross USD 110 billion by 2030 and India has the world’s fastest growing start-up ecosystem.
The Government of India recently launched ‘Production Linked Incentives’ (PLI) schemes that offer incentives of over 26 Billion Dollars in 14 key sectors.

‘Whitely Gold Award’ is annually awarded to people in recognition of their outstanding contribution to conservation.
Charudutt Mishra, a snow leopard conservationist, was awarded the Whitely Gold Award in 2022, for his efforts to involve local communities in conserving snow leopards. He had won the award in 2005. Mishra is also the first international Executive Director of the Snow Leopard Trust (SLT). He also helped establish the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Programme.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry launched the pilot phase of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
It is a first-of-its-kind initiative globally to pave way for democratising digital commerce to enhance the penetration of digital commerce in the country. The initiative aims to promote an open platform for exchange of goods and services through electronic networks. ONDC would standardise operations, promote inclusion of local suppliers and increase efficiencies in logistics.

Sports journalism will step into its 100th year of existence in Assam. On July 1, 1923, the first ever sports news on football match from Sivasagar was published in the weekly magazine named ‘Asomiya’, published by Chandra Kumar Agarwalla.
The Assam Sports Journalists Association (ASJA) has decided to celebrate the occasion with a year-long programme.

Labour Day or International Workers’ Day is observed each year on the first day of May to celebrate the achievements of the working class. It is also called as ‘May Day.’
The first May Day celebrations took place in 1890 after proclamation by the first international congress of socialist parties in 1889 in Paris, to dedicate May 1 as the “Workers Day of International Unity and Solidarity.” The first May Day celebration in India was organised in Madras (now Chennai) by Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan in 1923. This was the first time the red flag was used in India.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes is headed by a Chairman and can have six members who are in the rank of Special Secretary. It is the administrative body for the Income Tax department. There are five members in the board at present.
Recently, IRS officer Sangeeta Singh has been given the additional charge of CBDT chairperson after incumbent JB Mohapatra retired as the head of CBDT.

The Maharashtra Department of Prisons has launched first kind of credit scheme for prisoners in jails across the state.
The loan scheme titled Jivhala is offered by the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank for inmates who are undergoing a prison sentence of more than three years. The pilot was introduced at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune, and will be extended to nearly 60 prisons. Inmates can use the loans for education of their children, medical treatment of family members, legal fees, or other expenses.

The Bach Long Bridge, meaning ‘the white dragon’ is claimed to be the world’s longest glass-bottomed bridge. This is Vietnam’s third glass-bottomed bridge.
The Bach Long Bridge which stretches to over 600 metres surpasses the 526-metre long bridge in Guangdong, China. The white pedestrian bridge is made of three layers of thick French-produced tempered glass that can support up to 450 people at a time.

World Health Organization (WHO) marks May 5 every year as ‘World Hand Hygiene Day’, to encourage people to clean hands at the right times with the right products.
This year, the Campaign theme is “A health care “quality and safety climate or culture” that values hand hygiene and infection prevention and control” and the Slogan is “Unite for safety: clean your hands”.

The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) has said that it is in discussions with India on procurement of wheat, as countries face food security challenges amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
World Food Program, IMF, World Bank recently encouraged governments not to put export bans on staple food grains. India has committed to supplying 50,000 tonnes of wheat grain to Afghanistan, which it has already started.
