Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak honoured with Kyoto Prize

Ms Spivak is amongst the recipients of this year’s Kyoto Prize.

She won the award in the Arts and Philosophy category for her “deep thinking on humanities against intellectual colonialism in relation to globalisation”.

• Known for the essay "Can the Subaltern Speak?"

Kyoto Prize

• The highest private award given in Japan for global achievement.
• Instituted by the Inamori Foundation, a charitable body founded in 1984.
• Presented annually in the fields of Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences and Arts and Philosophy.
• Each laureate receives a diploma, a gold Kyoto Prize medal and a cash gift of ¥50 million ($630,000).

• Japanese molecular biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded the Basic Sciences Prize
