The Chauri Chaura incident is a landmark event in the history of India’s fight for independence. The incident occurred in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh on February 4th, 1922. On this day, the police opened fire on a group of protestors participating in the Non Cooperation Movement. In retaliation, the crowd burnt down a police station along with its occupants. The Chauri Chaura Centenary celebrations are to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister to mark 100 years since the incident.
