Cabinet Approves Major Multi-Tracking Projects

On June 11, 2025, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) in India approved two railway projects. These projects aim to enhance rail connectivity and operational efficiency across multiple states. The total estimated cost for these initiatives is ₹6,405 crore.
Project Overview
The approved projects include the Koderma–Barkakana doubling project, which spans 133 km in Jharkhand, and the Ballari–Chikjajur doubling project, extending 185 km through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Both projects aim to improve rail capacity and streamline operations.
Significance of the Koderma–Barkakana Project
This project is crucial as it connects major coal-producing areas in Jharkhand. It serves as the most efficient rail link between Patna and Ranchi. Enhancing this route will facilitate the transportation of essential commodities like coal and iron ore.
Importance of the Ballari–Chikjajur Project
The Ballari–Chikjajur line will cover key districts in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It will improve accessibility to Mangaluru Port, boosting trade and commerce in the region. This project will also enhance the movement of freight and passenger trains.
Impact on Connectivity
The combined length of these projects is 318 km. They will enhance connectivity to approximately 1,408 villages, impacting a population of about 28.19 lakh. Improved rail links are expected to ease travel and transport for millions.
Capacity Augmentation and Economic Benefits
These projects are designed to accommodate an additional freight traffic volume of 49 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The Koderma–Barkakana project will contribute around 30 MTPA, while the Ballari–Chikjajur project will add approximately 19 MTPA. This increase in capacity is anticipated to lower logistics costs and reduce dependency on oil imports.
Environmental Considerations
The railway projects are expected to lead to lower carbon dioxide emissions. It is estimated that these initiatives will reduce CO2 emissions by around 264 crore kg. This aligns with India’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection.
Completion Timeline
Both projects are set to be completed within three years. The timely execution of these initiatives is crucial for achieving the expected benefits in connectivity and economic growth.
