Armenia Joins IUCN as Newest State Member

Armenia became the newest State Member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) during the 2025 World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi. This membership marks step in Armenia’s environmental journey. It will provide access to global expertise, innovative conservation tools and international partnerships. Armenia aims to accelerate its biodiversity goals and prepare for hosting COP17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2026.
Geographical and Ecological Significance
Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Armenia hosts diverse ecosystems. These include alpine meadows, mountain forests, semi-deserts and freshwater habitats. The country is home to rare species such as the Critically Endangered Caucasian leopard, the endemic Bezoar goat and the Sevan trout found only in Lake Sevan. This biodiversity richness makes Armenia important area for conservation efforts.
Policy and Legislative Advances
Armenia has developed strong biodiversity policies. Key initiatives include the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the Red Book of Armenia. These frameworks guide species protection and habitat conservation. Despite progress, challenges remain in improving biodiversity monitoring, strengthening legal frameworks and securing sustainable financing for conservation projects.
