₹32 crore approved for planned bowstring bridge linking Rishikesh and Muni Ki Reti paths

On 31 October 2026, the planned bowstring bridge over the Chandrabhaga River received financial approval of ₹32 crore. The approval follows an announcement made about four years earlier.

Bridge design and construction

The bridge will be about 150 metres long, comprising two spans of 75 metres each. It is planned to provide a direct pedestrian link between the path at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh and Purnanand Astha Path in Muni Ki Reti, reducing the need to take a longer route between the riverbank paths.

The Uttarakhand Infrastructure and Investment Development Board assigned construction responsibility to the Uttarakhand Project Development and Construction Corporation Limited. The project manager said construction was being prepared to begin within a month; this is a planned start, not a reported completion date.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Bowstring structural action: A bowstring bridge is a tied-arch form: the arch carries compression while a deck-level tie resists horizontal thrust, limiting forces transferred to the abutments.
  • Chandrabhaga river distinction: The Chandrabhaga near Rishikesh is a Ganga tributary, distinct from the Himalayan Chandrabhaga that becomes the Chenab after its confluence at Tandi.
