General Studies Mains-2014 Paper-4 (Ethics and Integrity) Answer : Q-2-a

In the context of defence services, ‘patriotism’ demands readiness to even lay down one’s life in protecting the nation. According to you, what does patriotism imply in everyday civil life? Explain with illustrations and justify your answer. (150 words)

As civilians, we haven’t taken an oath to lay our lives for our nation. However, this doesn’t have to stop us from being patriotic. Patriotism just refers to love for one’s country. We may show our love for our country by caring for its citizens, by upholding the principles on which the country was built, and by doing our duty to our nation.

Expressing support for our troops, and standing in solidarity with them is a patriotic act. Singing of the national anthem and expressing pride in our nation is an act of patriotism. To me, instances of human compassion wherein you support and assist your countrymen are examples of patriotism. Following one’s fundamental duties is patriotic. To me, any act that expresses one’s love for one’s nation and seeks to improve one’s country either by helping its people or otherwise is a truly patriotic act.
