Continuation of National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship

The continuation of the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) has been approved by the Ministry of Education (MoE) has approved) till 2025-26 with minimum changes in the eligibility criteria like increasing the income ceiling from the present Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh per annum.

Overview:

The scheme’s objective is to provide scholarships to the meritorious students belonging from the economically weaker sections so that they do not drop out at class 8 and to encourage them to continue their education.
Under this scheme 1,00,000 scholarships of Rs 12,000 per annum per student are awarded to all those selected students of class 9 every year.
The renewal and continuation of the monetary scholarship are also done in classes 10 to 12 so that the students can pursue their education in government-aided, state government, and local body schools.
In the year 2008-09, this scheme was launched by the government.
Since its launch a total of 22.06 lakh scholarships worth Rs 1,783.03 crore have been awarded under this scheme.
Rs 1827 crore has been approved for this scheme with an envision to reach 14.76 lakh students.

How are students selected for this scholarship?

The scholarship receiving students are chosen through an exam which is conducted by the governments of different states and Union Territories. This scholarship scheme has been registered on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

How are the funds disbursed?

The scholarship amount is directly deposited in the student’s bank accounts via electronic transfer using the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) in Direct Bank Transfer (DBT) mode. The central government provides 100 percent of the funds under this scheme.
