Digging a circular wall is to make the well stronger. This is because the water exerts pressure on the wall of the well and this pressure is equal in all sides, as all sides are at an equal distance from the centre of the wall. If the well is in other shapes than circular the pressure exerted by the water will be irregular and there will be a possibility of its collapsing.
