WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine

On 9th March 2022, the Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Modi approved the establishment of the World Health Organization Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (WHO GCTM) in Gujarat.

About WHO GCTM

  • The establishment of WHO GCTM in India was announced by the Director-General of WHO on the occasion of 5th Ayurveda Day on 13th November 2020.
  • WHO GCTM will be established in Jamnagar, Gujarat under the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy).
  • To establish the GCTM, a host Country agreement was signed between the Indian Government and WHO. This would be the first and only WHO’s global outpost Centre for traditional medicine across the world.

Objectives of WHO GCTM

  • To position AYUSH systems (traditional medicine) across the world.
  • To provide leadership on health matters related to traditional medicine.
  • To ensure quality, safety, and rational use of traditional medicine.
  • To develop guidelines, tools & methodologies, for collecting data and assessing impact.
  • To create WHO traditional medicine informatics center through the collaboration of existing traditional medicine data banks, virtual libraries, and research institutes.
  • To conduct training programs partnering with the WHO Academy and other partners.

Collaboration between Ministry of AYUSH and WHO

Ministry of AYUSH has collaborated with the WHO for various initiatives:

  • Developing M-yoga app.
  • Supporting the work of International Pharmacopeia of Herbal Medicine (IPHM).
  • Developing benchmark documents on the practice of Ayurveda and Unani Systems.
  • Introducing the second module in the Traditional Medicine Chapter of the International classification of Diseases-11.

WHO-GCTM will play a crucial role in the identification of challenges faced by the countries in regulating Traditional Medicine.
