What is Yamunotri Dham?
Yamunotri Dham is part of Char Dham – the four famous Hindu pilgrimages in the Himalayas. The other famous Hindu pilgrimages in the Himalayas are Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Yamunotri Dham is the starting point of the annual pilgrimage that is held from May to October. It is situated close to River Yamuna’s source.
Why is Yamunotri Dham in news recently?
The state government of Uttarakhand has inked a contract to construct a 3.38 km ropeway from Janki Chatti in Kharsali to Yamunotri Dham. The ropeway will bring down the travel time to just 20 minutes from the current 2 to 3 hours. It is estimated to cost Rs. 166.82 crore. This ropeway is to be built at a height of 10,797 feet, based on Mono-Cable Detachable Gondola system technology.
Which God is in Yamunotri?
Goddess Yamuna. According to Hinduism, Goddess Yamuna is the daughter of Lord Surya, the sun god. Also, she is the twin sister of the god of death, Lord Yama. Hindus believe that Yamuna is holy and drinking and bathing in Yamuna water remove sins. Goddess Yamuna is also called “KALINDI” for her associations with KALA, the lord of death (Yama).
Where is Yamunotri Dham?
Yamunotri is the source of the river Yamuna and is located in the Garhwal region. It is at an altitude of 3,291 metres and is in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The temple is accessible only through a 13 km trek from Hanuman Chatti.
The temple is on the foothills of Kalind Parbat. To the side of the temple stands the mighty Bandarpoonch Parbat.

The flower blooms once a year from July-August. The flower represents Lord Krishna. The reddish stalks represent the 100 Kauravas. Hinds consider the flower sacred. The flower has a big role in the worship of the Yamuna goddess for her associations with Lord Krishna.
Who built the Yamunotri temple?
Tejri Naresh Sudarshan Shah built the temple in 1839. Later the temple was destructed in an earthquake. The Maharaja of Jaipur Gularaja rebuilt the temple in the 19th century.
