What is Bharat-NCAP?

On June 24, 2022, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) approved the Draft GSR Notification for introducing Bharat NCAP (New Car Assessment Program), in a bid to bring safer cars for India.

About Bharat NCAP

  • The New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) provides a mechanism, wherein automobiles in India will be accorded ‘Star Ratings’, on the basis of performance in crash tests.
  • This programme will serve as a consumer-centric platform, and allow customers to use safer cars in the basis of Star-Ratings.
  • It will promote a healthy competition among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) across the country, to manufacture safer vehicles.

Significance of the star ratings

According to Road Transport and Highways minister, Star Ratings of cars in India, on the basis of crash tests is significant to ensure structural and passenger safety in cars. It will also help in increasing export-worthiness of Indian automobiles. This program will make automobile industry in India Atma Nirbhar and will make India the top automobile hub worldwide.

Testing protocol of Bharat NCAP

Testing protocol of Bharat NCAP will be aligned with international crash-test protocols, factoring in existing regulations in India. It will allow OEMs to test their vehicles tested at own in-house testing facilities in India.

Why Car Safety Star Ratings is important?

Car Safety Star Ratings were earlier made visible on cars. The ratings could be equated to efficiency ratings in AC, fridge, and other electronics used in car. It helped customers to decide, what they wanted in their budget. Thus, if the practice of star rating is rolled out as standard industry practice, customers would be more enthusiastic about star ratings-based purchases.

Road Accidents in India

Road accident in India is high. In 2019, accidents resulted in injuries to 4,42,996 persons, and 1,81,113 deaths. In 2020, there were 3,54,796 road accidents, out of which 1,33,201 people died and 3,35,201 got injured.
