QUAD Leaders Summit 2022
The 2022 Quad summit started in Tokyo, Japan on 24th May 2022. The leaders of the Quad countries (Australia, India, Japan, and the United States) will participate.
What are the highlights of the Summit?
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Japan PM Fumio Kishida, and newly-elected Australian PM Antony Albanese participated in the Summit. This is the second in-person Quad Summit.
While addressing the Summit, PM Modi said that the Quad grouping is a force for good and is aimed at an inclusive Indo-Pacific region. He also appreciated the role of Quad in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
QUAD Fellowship was launched at the Summit. It is a first-of-its-kind scholarship program that aims to promote people-to-people linkages between the four members of Quad. Every year, the fellowship will sponsor 25 students from each Quad country to pursue higher studies and doctoral degrees at leading Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) universities in the United States.
What is the history of Quad?
An ad-hoc Tsunami Core Group formed in the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami is considered a precursor to the Quad. In 2007, then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe proposed the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue. However, following the exit of Australia, the Quad ceased. Again during the 2017 ASEAN Summit in Manila, all four countries agreed to revive the Quad to counter China.
The vision of Quad is “free and open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” and a rules-based maritime order in the East and South China seas.
What are the various initiatives under the Quad?
Quad infrastructure coordination group, green shipping network, clean-hydrogen partnership, Quad fellowship, semi-conductor supply chain initiative, Quad senior cyber group, etc have been formed by the Quad member nations.
There are also six leader-level working groups on the following issues: COVID-19 Response and Global Health Security, Climate, Critical and Emerging Technologies, Cyber, Space, and Infrastructure.
