Free Food Grains under Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana extended till November
On July 8, 2020, the Union Cabinet chaired by PM Modi approved to extend the free food grains scheme under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana till November, 2020.
Highlights
The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was introduced by PM Modi on June 30, 2020. GoI has chosen to extend till the month of November considering the fact that November is a festival time. Both Diwali and Bihar’s Chhath Puja.
Background
The Government of India will continue to provide 5kg of free food grains to all ration card beneficiaries. In order to achieve this, India will need 20 million tonnes of extra food grains. The usual requirement of food grains for the duration under Public Distribution System is 53-54 million tonnes.
Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana
So far during the first phase of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, 12 million tonnes of food grains was allocated for the months of April, May and June.
