About Digital India programme
Digital India programme was launched by government with a vision of transforming India into a knowledge economy and digitally empowered society. In India, e-governance initiatives took a broad dimension in mid-1990s for wider sectoral applications and emphasised on citizen-centric services. Important ICT initiatives of government included land record computerisation, railway computerization, focusing primarily on development of information systems. Later, several states started individual e-governance projects with the aim of providing electronic services to citizens.
