Himachal Pradesh: Largest Ever Water Supply Scheme Inaugurated

• In Himachal Pradesh largest ever water supply scheme constructed at a cost of Rs 70 Crore was inaugurated in Kangehan area of Kangra district. The scheme to profit a populace of 1,31,000.
  
• Priority given to supply safe drinking water to the inhabitants by the State Govt and all the labors are being made to build fresh water supply schemes in the outmost areas of the State, in addition to growing the present ones. 
  

PSLV C18 to put 4 satellites in orbit

PSLV C18 to be lift-off from the spaceport at Sriharikota at 11 a.m. on October 12, 2011. The rocket will put 4 satellites in the orbit. The 4 Satellites are: –

1. Megha-Tropiques, built by India and France to recognize global tropical weather and climate
2. SRM Sat, built by the students of SRM University, Chennai
3. Jugnu, a satellite integrated by students of IIT, Kanpur
4. VesselSat from Luxembourg

    

Poor quality of students entering IITs: Murthy

• Former Infosys chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy voiced his unhappiness over the caliber of engineers that pass out of the IITs. He stressed for a need to revamp the selection criterion for Students looking for ticket in the prominent technology institutions.
• He held that the quality of students entering Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has dropped over the years owing to the coaching classes that train engineering aspirants and majority of the Students performed weakly at jobs and global institutions of higher education.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs dies at 56

• The former CEO and co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs (56) passed away. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer for quite a few years.
  

Padma Shree Dr Mathoor Krishnamurti passes away

• Dr. Mathoor Krishnamurti, renowned author and a devout Gandhian passed away. He received more than 20 awards in his native country including the Padma Shri, the fourth highest award for a civilian for his role of a guardian of Indian tradition and culture and Gandhian principles.
  
• He was also India’s unofficial cultural ambassador in London for a long time. He was the Director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore. He also established London centre of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
  
• He was actively involved in various programmes in propagating Indian thoughts and values and authored a number of books.
  

Swedish poet Tomas Transtromer, wins Nobel Literature Prize

• Tomas Transtromer , a Swedish poet won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature. His phantasmagorical works about the mysteries of the human mind won the Nobel.
  

Indian & Bangladesh Armies to participate in joint exercise

• A team of Indian army will visit Bangladesh next week to take part in joint exercise with the Bangladesh army. The exercise will begin on October 9, 2011 in Sylhet and will finish on October 22, 2011.  
  
• The squad level exercise in Sylhet is part of the labours to set up friendliness and joint cooperation b/w the armies of the two adjacent nations. In 2010, a 23 member team of the Bangladesh army had taken part in joint exercises with Indian army at Jorhat.
  

Scientists claim that Comet: Hartley 2 contains water like Earth

• Scientists claim that Comet ‘Hartley 2’ comprises water like that found on Earth, than all the comets known.
  
• Scientists studied the comet using the Herschel space telescope with an aim to determine the portion of deuterium, an uncommon sort of hydrogen, there in the comet’s water. 
  
• The findings published in the “Nature”, clues at the thought that a great deal of the Earth’s water might have originally come from a comet’s impact.
  

India and Indonesia launch CECA negotiations

• India and Indonesia set up the negotiations for CECA (Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement). CECA to envelop economic cooperation, trade in goods and services and investment.
  
• The trip by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. A. Sharma at the Indonesia-India Biennial Trade Ministers’ Forum (BTMF) in Jakarta takes up importance owing to the fact that India would be taking part in ASEAN and East Asia summits next month at Bali under the chairmanship of Indonesia.
  
• Both Govt also settled to set up a working group on trade and investment forum and an additional working group on recognition and removal of trade barriers. Mentioning that India is not free from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Indonesia carries on to inflict ban on import of Indian buffalo meat. India’s argument is India has FMD-free zones. Currently, India exports buffalo meat to more than 60 countries, including Malaysia, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Germany, the UAE, Russia and Jordan.
  
• Likewise, delays are faced by the Indian pharmaceutical companies in drug registration and owing to few regulations viz. those needing foreign drug registration holders to set up a production facility in Indonesia within 2 years of registration and an FDI cap of 70%, which restrains Indian exports of pharmaceuticals and Indian investment in the pharmaceutical sector. The prestigious “India Show” will be held by India in Jakarta on March 6, 2012.
