Amma Vodi scheme launched in Andhra Pradesh

On January 9, 2020, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy launched Amma Vodi Scheme in Chittoor. It is one of the nine flagship programmes of the Andhra Government. The programmes are called Navratanalu. The scheme is first of its kind in the country.

Key Features of the Programme

The scheme aims at benefitting school students studying in classes I to XII. It includes both public and private schools. Under the scheme, these students belonging to Below Poverty Line will get Rs 15,000 per annum. However, the guardian or mother of the child should ensure 75% attendance of the child.

Funding

The State Government has allocated Rs 6318 crores under the scheme. The funding aims at helping lakhs of below poverty line mothers trying to educate their children. The amount is to be directly transferred to the bank account of the beneficiaries.

The amount is to be transferred to the accounts of the mothers till the children complete their Class 12 education.

Educational reforms in the state

The Andhra Pradesh Government has allocated budget of Rs 14,000 crores to enable educational institutions and revamp the older infrastructure. It has also adopted English as medium of instruction in schools for class 1 to 6.
