The “World Social Protection Report 2024-26” has been published by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The ILO’s World Social Protection Report 2024-26 states that India’s social protection coverage (excluding health) increased from 24% in 2021 to 49% in 2024. Social protection supports people facing risks like unemployment, disability, and poverty. It ensures security for children, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities. It helps in tackling poverty, inequality, and social exclusion. It aids climate adaptation and promotes sustainable economic practices. It also facilitates the transition to greener jobs.

The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for Bageshwar Dham Medical and Science Research Institute in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, on February 23. The institute will provide free treatment to underprivileged cancer patients. It will be built on 10 acres, with a 100-bed hospital in the first phase. The hospital will have state-of-the-art machines and specialist doctors for cancer treatment.

It analyzes how Indians allocate time to employment, caregiving, and leisure. A key finding is the rise in women’s participation in paid jobs, shifting from unpaid domestic work. Mount Fentale in northern Ethiopia released huge methane plumes starting January 31, 2025. This event, described as a “burp,” involved large amounts of methane escaping from underground gas deposits. The phenomenon was first detected through satellite monitoring and later confirmed by GHGSat. This unprecedented natural event could have significant climate change implications due to the high potency of methane as a greenhouse gas.

India’s External Affairs Minister and Heads of Missions from 61 countries took elephant and jeep safari in Kaziranga National Park. Kaziranga National Park is in Assam, northeastern India. It is the largest undisturbed area in the Brahmaputra Valley floodplain. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. The terrain consists of forests, tall elephant grass, reeds, marshes, and shallow pools.

The European Union (EU) acknowledged India’s concerns over the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). CBAM is an EU tariff on carbon-intensive imports to prevent carbon leakage. It aims to put a fair price on carbon emissions from imported goods and promote cleaner production globally. CBAM ensures that imported goods pay a carbon price equal to EU domestic production. It applies to all imports, including online orders and gifts. The mechanism helps the EU meet its climate goals by discouraging carbon-intensive production outside the EU.
