Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog, hosted ‘Mega Tinkering Day 2025’, India’s largest school-based tinkering event. More than 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) from all 35 states and union territories participated virtually. The activity was guided online with real-time collaboration, involving students from remote areas like Leh, Kargil, Virudhunagar, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Kanniyakumari, Bhuj, and Kutchh. The initiative showcased grassroots innovation, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” and making India a global leader in school-level innovation.

The Bihar government has doubled the pension for ‘JP Senanis’, political activists jailed during the Emergency for supporting Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan’s movement. The decision was approved in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister (CM) Nitish Kumar. Pension for those jailed over six months is increased from ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 per month. Pension for those jailed less than six months is raised from ₹7,500 to ₹15,000 per month. This adjustment falls under JP Senani Samman Pension Scheme. The scheme was launched by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar in 2009. Currently, 3,354 people receive this pension.

Notes:
India recently launched its first fully indigenous commercial Earth Observation (EO) satellite constellation. It is developed by a private consortium led by Pixxel Space under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The satellites carry advanced sensors like Panchromatic, Multispectral, Hyperspectral, and Microwave Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). They will provide Analysis Ready Data (ARD) and Value-Added Services (VAS). This reduces India’s dependence on foreign satellite data and ensures national data sovereignty. It positions India as a global leader in geospatial intelligence

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released a report on Framework for Responsible and Ethical Enablement of Artificial Intelligence (FREE-AI) in the financial sector. FREE-AI Committee was constituted on 6th December 2024 to promote innovation while safeguarding consumer interests. The report prescribes 7 guiding sutras and 26 recommendations under six strategic pillars for responsible AI adoption. Objectives include transparency, accountability, fairness, customer protection, and balancing innovation with risk mitigation. AI benefits include efficiency, automation, data-driven decisions, improved customer experience, fraud prevention, and regulatory compliance.

The Prime Minister recently announced the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana to boost formal job creation. The scheme aims to create over 3.5 crore jobs in two years. It provides direct cash incentives to both employees and employers. Part A supports first-time employees registered with Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) with one-month EPF wage up to Rs. 15,000 in two instalments after 6 and 12 months along with a financial literacy programme. Part B gives incentives to employers up to Rs. 3000 per employee per month for two years and for the manufacturing sector the support continues for the 3rd and 4th year. The scheme will also formalize the workforce and expand social security coverage for crores of youth.

Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann announced that cops performing well in the “Yudh Nashian Virudh” (anti-drug war) campaign will get monetary rewards. From March 1, 2026, police personnel recovering 1 kg heroin will receive ₹1.2 lakh as a cash reward. Pakistan is the main source of drugs and the state government has demolished houses built with drug money, jailed smugglers, and stopped open drug sales. Punjab became the first state to deploy its own anti-drone system to destroy objects coming from across the border. For the first time, an anti-drug syllabus has been introduced in Punjab schools to create awareness.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) inaugurated “Mauli,” India’s first all-women Clean Street Food Hub in Mumbai on August 17, 2025. The hub was inaugurated by Union Minister Piyush Goyal under FSSAI’s Eat Right India movement. It is fully operated by women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) trained under FoSTaC (Food Safety Training and Certification). Women vendors are ensuring hygiene, food safety and high-quality street food delivery. FSSAI aims to expand Clean Street Food Hubs nationwide and deepen Eat Right India in schools, workplaces and communities.

Recently, ten States along with the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) recorded a disposal rate of over 100 percent in July 2025. NCDRC achieved 122 percent disposal, while Tamil Nadu led with 277 percent, followed by Rajasthan 214 percent, Telangana 158 percent, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand 150 percent each. Other high performers include Meghalaya 140 percent, Kerala 122 percent, Puducherry 111 percent, Chhattisgarh 108 percent, and Uttar Pradesh 101 percent. Overall disposal of cases in July 2025 was much higher than July 2024, showing progress in timely resolution.

India’s first privately funded mathematics research institute, Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI), was launched in Mumbai. It is backed by Lodha Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Lodha Group, with an endowment of ₹20,000 crore. Lodha Mathematical Sciences Institute (LMSI) aims to host intensive global courses, apply mathematics to infrastructure, healthcare, and economics, and launch the Indian Congress of Mathematics.

On this day in 1839, the French government announced the invention of the daguerreotype, an early photographic process by Louis Daguerre. This invention made photography accessible and practical for people. The day raises awareness about photography’s role in storytelling, communication, and documentation. The 2025 theme is “My Favourite Photo.”
