The Khelo India ASMITA Football League 2025-26 was inaugurated by Smt. Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, at Godavari Engineering College Ground, Jalgaon, Maharashtra. The league promotes women’s participation in sports and nurtures young female talent, especially from tribal and minority communities. It features aspiring footballers aged 13 and under, providing opportunities from first-time players to hidden champions. The initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ and ‘Khelo Bharat Niti’ for nation-building and women’s empowerment.

Recently, a rare and colourful Blue Pinkgill mushroom (Entoloma hochstetteri) was documented in Kagaznagar forest division, Komaram Bheem Asifabad district, Telangana. It is also called “sky-blue mushroom” and has pink to purplish gills. It is native to New Zealand, it is featured on the country’s $50 note. Its vivid blue colour comes from rare azulene pigments. It has flat or funnel-shaped caps, pink or white gills, and centrally or laterally attached stems.

The Surya Command of the Indian Army, with the Drone Federation of India, hosted the Surya Dronathon 2025, a pioneering national drone competition. It was held in Spiti Valley at Sumdo, Himachal Pradesh, featuring one of India’s highest drone obstacle courses at 10,700 feet altitude. The event brought together skilled freelancers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) from across the country. It aimed to promote indigenous technology and innovation in the defence sector, supporting “Atmanirbhar Bharat.” Phase 1 took place from August 10-15, 2025, and Phase 2 is scheduled to take place from August 20-24, 2025.

A Kerala tourist miraculously survived an elephant attack in Karnataka’s Bandipur Tiger Reserve (BTR) after being pushed down and pinned under the tusker’s foot. Bandipur Tiger Reserve (BTR) is located in Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts of Karnataka at the tri-junction of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. It is an “ecological confluence” of the Western and Eastern Ghats and was once a hunting ground of Mysore rulers. It forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On August 14, 2025, Dr. Vece Paes, a 1972 Munich Olympics bronze medal-winning hockey player, passed away in Kolkata at the age of 80 after prolonged illness. He was suffering from an advanced stage of Parkinson’s disease. Born in 1945 in Goa, he combined careers as a medical practitioner and a hockey player. He made his international debut in 1966 at the Hamburg International Cup and later won a bronze at the 1971 World Cup and 1972 Olympics. He represented clubs like Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, winning multiple Beighton Cups and Calcutta League titles.

More than 500 humanoid robots from 16 countries, including Japan, took part in the World Humanoid Robot Games 2025 in Beijing, China. The four-day event featured competitions in sports, tasks, and real-world scenarios. Robots competed in 26 events such as track and field, soccer, dancing, and kickboxing. A robot completed the 100-meter sprint in 21.5 seconds, showing remarkable speed. Robots also showed agility in kickboxing by regaining balance after hits. Some robots collapsed in soccer and collided during the 400-meter relay. The event highlighted both rapid progress and challenges in humanoid robotics.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the state’s first and India’s second Green Hydrogen Plant at Khanimpur, Gorakhpur. India’s first Make-in-India green hydrogen plant is at Kandla Port, Gujarat. The plant is set up by Torrent Gas and Torrent Power and will blend Green Hydrogen with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG). Green Hydrogen is produced by splitting water using renewable energy without fossil fuels.

Udyam Sakhi Portal was launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) with an expenditure of ₹43.52 lakh. Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje informed Rajya Sabha that it is helping women entrepreneurs start, build, and expand businesses, fostering self-reliance. It provides women entrepreneurs information on financial schemes, policies, and programmes of the MSME sector. The portal nurtures entrepreneurship and creates business models for low-cost products and services. It empowers women to become self-reliant and self-sufficient.

Recently, Palmyra palm trees in Odisha were found to reduce lightning-related deaths and provide food for elephants during lean seasons. The tree is commonly known as sugar palm, toddy palm, or fan palm. It is native to tropical Africa but widely cultivated and naturalized in India, often planted as a windbreak on plains. Palmyra trees act as natural shelters for birds, bats, and wild animals. The main product is sweet sap (toddy), which ferments quickly and is used as a beverage.

A 24-member Indian archery squad is participating in the World Archery Youth Championships 2025 starting 19 August in Winnipeg, Canada. The tournament runs until 24 August and features 570 youth archers from 63 countries. Competitions include recurve and compound disciplines across Under-18 (U18) and Under-21 (U21) categories. Event formats include individual, team, and mixed team for both men and women. India aims to repeat its 2023 performance in Limerick, Ireland, where it won 11 medals, including six golds.
