Operation Keller

The Indian Army achieved victory against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Operation Keller resulted in the neutralisation of three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in the Shopian district. This operation is part of India’s ongoing efforts to combat Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the region.
Background
Operation Keller was launched on May 13, 2025, following precise intelligence inputs about the presence of heavily armed terrorists in the Shoekal Keller area. The operation was led by units of the Rashtriya Rifles. The security forces initiated a cordon and search operation, which led to intense gunfire from the terrorists. After a prolonged firefight, all three terrorists were neutralised.
Key Figures Involved
The terrorists killed included Shahid Kuttay, a top LeT commander, and Adnan Shafi. Kuttay was known for his involvement in several terror incidents and had joined the ranks of LeT in March 2023. Shafi, a category “C” terrorist, was involved in the killing of a non-local labourer in October 2024. The identity of the third terrorist is still being verified.
Significance of the Operation
Operation Keller marks the Indian Army’s commitment to counter-terrorism. It follows closely after ‘Operation Sindoor‘, which targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The success of these operations puts stress on the evolving tactics of the Indian Armed Forces in response to the persistent threat of terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
Lashkar-e-Taiba Overview
Lashkar-e-Taiba is one of the most dangerous terror outfits in South Asia. Established in the late 1980s, it operates under an extremist ideology influenced by Wahhabism. Initially focused on Jammu and Kashmir, LeT has expanded its activities across India, advocating for Islamic rule. It has been designated a terrorist organisation by multiple countries and international bodies.
Pakistan’s Role in Terrorism
Pakistan has been source of support for terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The strategy involves training and infiltrating terrorists across the Line of Control. Groups like LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammed operate with the backing of Pakistan’s military and intelligence agencies. Their activities have led to widespread violence and instability in the region.
Evolution of India’s Counter-Terrorism Strategy
India’s approach to counter-terrorism has evolved . From conventional military operations in the 1990s to ‘s surgical strikes and intelligence-driven operations, the Indian Armed Forces have adapted to changing threats. The focus is now on precision and modern surveillance, enhancing the effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts.
