NIF Progress Report 2025

India has made notable strides in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as brought into light in the National Indicator Framework (NIF) Progress Report 2025. Released on Statistics Day, this report outlines time series data on various SDG indicators. It reflects improvements in sectors like health, education, and social protection since 2015–16. However, challenges remain in areas such as clean energy and inequality.

Key Achievements in Health and Social Protection

The report indicates a substantial increase in social protection coverage. The proportion of the population covered rose from 22% in 2016 to 64.3% in 2025. Maternal and child health indicators have also improved , showcasing the effectiveness of health initiatives. The number of senior citizens receiving institutional assistance surged to 157,000 in 2023–24, up from 23,000 in 2015.

Advancements in Education

In education, the gross enrolment ratio for tertiary education increased from 23.7% in 2015–16 to 29.5% in 2022–23. This rise indicates better access to higher education. The government’s focus on educational reforms has contributed to this growth, aiming for a more educated workforce.

Economic Growth and Agricultural Productivity

The gross value added (GVA) in agriculture per worker increased from ₹61,247 in 2015–16 to ₹94,110 in 2024–25. This improvement suggests enhanced agricultural productivity and income. Such growth is vital for rural economies and food security.

Environmental Progress

The report shows a modest increase in renewable energy’s share of total installed electricity generation, rising to 22.13% in 2024–25 from 16.02% in 2015–16. However, this remains an area needing further attention. Additionally, forest cover increased from 21.34% to 21.76% of the geographical area, indicating positive environmental trends.

Technological Integration in Data Collection

The launch of the GoIStats mobile application marks step in data accessibility. This app provides real-time access to crucial socio-economic indicators. The initiative aims to enhance data-driven policymaking, making statistics more available to the public.

The Role of Statistics in Development

Statistics Day commemorates the contributions of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis. The government emphasises the importance of statistical reforms. Technological advancements are transforming the statistical system for better data monitoring. This evolution supports the broader goal of Viksit Bharat.
