National Sports Policy 2025

The National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025 represents shift in India’s approach to sports. Approved by the Union Cabinet, it aims to position India as a global sporting powerhouse. This policy replaces the outdated NSP 2001 and is designed to enhance the country’s performance in international sporting events, including the upcoming 2036 Olympic Games. The NSP 2025 is built on extensive consultations with various stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive framework.

Key Pillars of NSP 2025

Excellence on the Global Stage The NSP focuses on enhancing sports from grassroots to elite levels. It aims to identify and nurture talent early. Competitive leagues and improved sports infrastructure are crucial. The policy promotes world-class training systems and encourages the use of sports science and technology. Additionally, it seeks to develop coaches and support staff effectively.

Sports for Economic Development

Recognising sports as an economic driver, the NSP 2025 promotes sports tourism and aims to attract international events. Strengthening the sports manufacturing ecosystem is vital. The policy encourages entrepreneurship and private sector involvement through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

Sports for Social Development

The NSP marks sports’ role in social inclusion. It aims to increase participation among women, economically disadvantaged groups, and persons with disabilities. The revitalisation of indigenous games is also a priority. The policy encourages sports as a career option and integrates it into education, promoting volunteerism and dual-career pathways.

Sports as a People’s Movement

To encourage a national movement, the NSP aims to drive mass participation in sports. It plans to launch nationwide fitness campaigns and create fitness indices for schools and workplaces. Access to sports facilities will be enhanced to encourage community engagement and promote a culture of fitness.

Integration with Education

In alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, the NSP proposes integrating sports into school curricula. It aims to provide specialised training for educators and physical education teachers to enhance sports education and awareness among students.

Strategic Framework for Implementation

The NSP 2025 outlines a comprehensive implementation strategy.

  • It emphasises governance through a robust regulatory framework.
  • Innovative financing mechanisms will engage the private sector effectively.
  • The use of emerging technologies, like AI and data analytics, will enhance performance tracking and programme implementation.
  • A national monitoring framework with defined benchmarks and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will ensure accountability.

The policy also encourages states to align their sports initiatives with national objectives, promoting a whole-of-government approach.
