Israel Launches Dror-1

Israel marked a major milestone in 2025 by launching Dror-1, its first fully government-funded and domestically built communications satellite. The launch took place from Cape Canaveral, Florida, using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Dror-1 represents a strategic leap in Israel’s space capabilities and communication infrastructure.

Overview of Dror-1 Satellite

Dror-1 is a geostationary satellite orbiting about 36,000 km above the Earth’s equator. It provides continuous coverage over Israel and nearby regions. The satellite weighs approximately 4.5 tonnes and spans 17.8 metres. Designed for a 15-year mission, it will serve Israel’s communication needs into the late 2030s. The project began in 2018 with an estimated cost of Rs 1,670 crore.

Technological Features

Dror-1 carries an advanced digital payload with cutting-edge signal processing technologies. It incorporates a space smartphone design, enabling software-defined communication. This allows reprogramming from the ground to adjust coverage, signal use, and operational settings dynamically. The satellite was built entirely in Israel, eliminating dependence on foreign components or vendors.

Launch and Orbital Operations

Launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, Dror-1 was initially placed into a geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). Within hours, it transmitted its first signals back to Earth. Using onboard propulsion, it manoeuvred into its final geostationary orbit, maintaining a fixed position above the equator. This orbit ensures uninterrupted communication coverage for Israel.

Strategic Importance

Dror-1 is Israel’s first state-owned communications satellite. Previously, satellites like the Amos series were built by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) but owned by private firm Spacecom. The Amos-6 satellite was destroyed in a 2016 SpaceX launchpad explosion, prompting a shift in policy. In 2018, the government adopted a strategy to prioritise domestic manufacturing, sovereign control, and strategic independence in satellite communications.

Impact on Israel’s Space Programme

Dror-1 marks a turning point for Israel’s space ambitions. It demonstrates advanced technological capabilities in satellite design and manufacturing. The satellite’s reprogrammable nature offers flexibility in response to changing communication demands. It also strengthens national security by ensuring sovereign control over critical communication infrastructure.
