India-Afghanistan Joint Working Group Reviews Bilateral Trade and Economic Cooperation

The India-Afghanistan Joint Working Group on Trade, Commerce and Investment held a virtual meeting on 1 September 2026 to review bilateral trade and commercial cooperation. The meeting covered trade facilitation, customs cooperation, visa facilitation for Afghan traders, banking and financial cooperation, energy, tariff concessions, and cargo connectivity.

India and Afghanistan maintain a bilateral trade framework that covers goods movement, customs procedures, and market access. The official trade figures for 2025–26 placed bilateral trade at USD 907.85 million, with Indian exports of USD 253.63 million and imports of USD 654.22 million.

Joint Working Group on Trade, Commerce and Investment

A Joint Working Group is a bilateral mechanism used by two countries to discuss sector-specific issues and coordinate follow-up actions. The India-Afghanistan JWG meeting included representatives from commerce, industry, customs, regulatory authorities, and diplomatic missions of both countries.

The meeting agreed on enhanced customs data-sharing, improved trade connectivity, greater regulatory coordination in pharmaceuticals and agriculture, and promotion of business-to-business engagement. The discussion followed the fourth round of the India-Afghanistan Joint Committee Meeting held in New Delhi on 9 July 2026, which was co-chaired by M. Anand Prakash and Shuaib Baryalai.
