In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games were postponed to 2021. The event will still bear the name of Tokyo 2020.
Selection of Tokyo
The 2020 event would mark the second time Tokyo is hosting the Summer Olympic Games. This makes the city the only one in Asia to host the Summer Games twice- the previous games was hosted in 1964. Japan had previously hosted the Winter Games twice: in 1972 in Sapporo and in 1998 in Nagano.
The Recent Decision
It was recently decided that the Summer Olympic Games would be postponed to 2021 in light of the accelerating spread of COVID-19. The event would still be known as Tokyo 2020. This is the first time that the entire Olympic Games is being postponed.
Olympics Cancellations in History
Though this is the first time the games are being postponed, the Olympics have been cancelled several times in the past. It was cancelled once during the World War I, in 1916. It was cancelled twice during the World War II, in 1940 and in 1944. Disruptions occurred in the 1980 and 1984 games due to the Cold War boycotts.
