DoT and ITU Organise AI for Good Build-a-thon 5.0

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) organised the AI for Good Build-a-thon 5.0 during India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026. The event took place at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, on the final day of the congress, held from 10 to 14 October 2026. Its theme was “Creating innovative agents in 5G”, with participants developing Agentic Artificial Intelligence solutions for telecommunications.

Agentic Artificial Intelligence in Telecommunications

Agentic Artificial Intelligence refers to AI systems that can carry out tasks through sequences of actions to meet specified objectives. In telecommunications, such systems can be designed to support network operations, including resource management and service quality. The Build-a-thon asked teams to develop agent-based solutions while incorporating policy and regulatory considerations into their designs. More than 25 teams participated, with an average of four members in each team. The preparation phase began in early July and included five online mentoring sessions. Dr Bilel Jamoussi, Deputy Director and Chief of the Study Groups and Policy Department at ITU’s Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, inaugurated the event.

5G, Quality of Service and Network Orchestration

5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology. Quality of Service (QoS) refers to measurable network performance characteristics, such as latency, throughput and reliability. Network orchestration coordinates network resources and services to meet operational requirements. Team Netaxis from RVCE Bangalore won first prize for “Context Aware Agentic Orchestration of QoS and Adaptive Security in Resource Constrained 5G”. Team SNR won second prize, while team Agentnet received third prize. Team Orbitflow from SNU Chennai and team Handshake protocol shared the Women’s Prize. Team Nethealers received the Judges’ Prize.

ITU and Telecommunications Standards

The International Telecommunication Union is a United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies. Its Telecommunication Standardization Sector, known as ITU-T, develops international standards for telecommunications and information and communication technologies. Dr Jamoussi’s role at the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau connects the event with ITU’s standardisation work.
