Kapra Lake Restoration Advances with 70 Acres and ₹35 Crore
Kapra Lake is located in north-east Hyderabad, Telangana, and has a Full Tank Level (FTL) area of 112.80 acres. On 14 October 2026, local farmers voluntarily handed over 70 acres within the FTL area for the lake’s restoration. The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is spending approximately ₹35 crore on the project, of which about 60% of the development work was complete by that date.
Kapra Lake Restoration Project
HYDRAA Commissioner A. V. Ranghanath received letters of consent from the farmers on 14 October 2026. Kapra Lake is one of 14 lakes being developed in the second phase of HYDRAA’s water-body rejuvenation initiative in Hyderabad. The project includes desilting and work intended to support flood mitigation, groundwater recharge, aquatic habitats and biodiversity.
The lake’s FTL area is the area covered by water at the specified Full Tank Level. The 70 acres transferred for the project lie within this boundary. The reported FTL area of Kapra Lake is 112.80 acres.
Full Tank Level and Wetland Functions
A wetland is an area where water covers or saturates the soil permanently or seasonally. Wetlands can store water and provide habitats for aquatic plants and animals. Kapra Lake’s restoration plan includes natural filtration of pollutants and impurities through desilting, as well as measures to maintain the lake’s ecosystem.
Water storage in lakes can help reduce flood risks in surrounding areas during heavy rainfall. Groundwater recharge occurs when water moves from the surface into the ground and replenishes underground water stores. The Kapra Lake project includes both flood mitigation and groundwater recharge among its stated objectives.
Migratory Birds and Biodiversity
Kapra Lake is identified as a habitat for more than 470 species of migratory birds, including birds arriving from Australia, Europe and other regions. The restoration plan includes habitat creation for fish, birds, amphibians and other aquatic life. Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms in an area, including different species and their habitats.
The project’s stated objectives also include ecosystem support and pollutant filtration. These functions are linked to the lake’s role as a wetland and water-storage feature within Hyderabad.
