Veteran actor Saeed Jaffrey passes away

Veteran actor Saeed Jaffrey has passed away in London, England. He was 86.
He is best-known for his acting roles in movies like Gandhi, Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Henna and Ram Teri Ganga Maili.

About Saeed Jaffrey

• Jaffrey was born on 8 January 1929 in Malerkotla in then Punjab province of British India.
• He had started his career in All India Radio (AIR) and later as a theatre actor after he studied drama from The Catholic University of America.
• Jaffrey was the first Indian to take Shakespearean plays on a tour to the United States.
• He had appeared in more than 100 Bollywood productions in the 1980s and 1990s and his film credits include The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977), Gandhi (1982), A Passage to India (1984), The Far Pavilions (1984), The Razor’s Edge (1984), and My Beautiful Laundrette (1985).
• In his television career, he had starred in Gangsters (1975–1978), The Jewel in the Crown (1984), Tandoori Nights (1985–1987) and Little Napoleons (1994).
• Awards and Honours: He was also the first Indian to receive the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995 for his contributions to drama.
• He was also the first Asian actor to receive British and Canadian Academy Awards nominations.
• In 1978, he was awarded Filmfare Award for Shatranj Ke Khiladi in the Best Supporting Actor category.
