Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban completes 5 years of implementation

On June 25, 2020, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban completed 5 years of its successful implementation. Along with PMAY, the Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT schemes also completed their 5 years of successful journey.
In order to commemorate the success of the schemes, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched an online event. The event announced the success, outcome and achievements of the schemes in the last 5 years
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
The scheme was launched to provide pucca houses to all the eligible the beneficiaries of Urban India by 2022. It worked towards fulfilling its vision of “Housing for All by 2022”. Under the scheme, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs received a demand of 1.12 crores of houses and 1.05 cores have been approved.
According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the number of houses sanctioned under the scheme is almost 8 times more than those sanctioned during the span of 10 years.
The success and achievements of the scheme are as follows
- National Urban Housing Fund was created. The fund currently holds Rs 65,00 crores.
- Through Credit Link Subsidy Scheme, the Middle Income Group were provided with the benefits for the first time. So far 10 lakh beneficiaries of Lower Income Group, Economically Weaker Section and Middle Income Group were brought under the scheme.
- The scheme also identified innovative technologies through Global Housing Technology Challenge. Around 6 light house projects are now being implemented across 6 states. They are to act as live laboratories and demonstrate their proven cost effective, speedier and innovative technologies. The houses are eco-friendly and climate resilient as well
Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan
The Atma Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyan announced housing for the migrants under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. It has been named the Affordable Rental Housing Complex scheme. Apart from the migrant workers, the scheme will also include beneficiaries from low income groups namely rickshaw pullers, street vendors, workers in hospitality sector, etc.
