NSS releases report on disability

The National Statistical Office conducted survey of Persons with disabilities in the country between the period July 2018 and December 2018.

The main objective of the survey is to estimate indicators of incidence and prevalence of disability, facilities available to persons with disability, age at onset of disability, arrangement of regular care giver, difficulties faced by the persons with disabilities, out of pocket expenses.

The survey carried out in the year 2018 was the 76th round. It included all the disabilities that were included in The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Highlights

The data was collected from 1,18,152 households. The prevalence of disability was 2.2%. Their contribution to the population was 2.3% in rural and 2% in urban. Disability among males were higher than females. The onset of disability in 365 days was 86 per 1,00,000 persons.

Around 52.2% were literate in the age group greater than 7 years. Between age group of 3 and 35 years, 10.1% attended pre-school.

The survey says that 21.8% of the disabled people in the country received aid from Government. Only 28% had certificate of disability. The unemployment rate among persons with disability was 4.2% and the Labor Force Participation Rate was 23.8%.
