NPR Data collection in Odisha in April-May
Published: January 7, 2020
The National Population Register (NPR) exercise will be initiated from 16th April to 31st May this year in Odisha under which some new features related to parents such as Date and Place of Birth of parents will be added. The National Population Register was previously recorded in 2010 under which enumerators had recorded data from 14 fields, the number of fields remains the same this year but additional information has been added in some specific fields related to parents.
In view of apprehensions that NPR could lead to the National Register of Citizens (NRC), earlier on 20th December 2019, Kerala and the West Bengal Government had put a hold to the NPR process in their respective states. The largest political party in terms of representation in the Odisha Legislative Assembly Biju Janata Dal’s President and the Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik had earlier said that his neither his party nor the Government of Odisha has opposed the Citizenship (Amendment)Act of 2019, and had allowed the implementation of NPR process in the state of Odisha, but had cleared that the Odisha Government would not implement the NRC in the state.
