The Mahakaleshwar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and located on the banks of the Shipra River in Ujjain. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and dates back to at least the 6th century BC, though it was reconstructed in the 18th century.
The five-storied temple features architecture influenced by Chalukya, Maratha, and Bhumija styles. The temple houses sculptures of Lord Shiva, Ganesh, Parvati, and Karttikeya and includes a tank built in sarvatobhadra style.

Taiwan received the first shipment of 100 land-based Harpoon anti-ship missile systems from the U.S. The Harpoon missile (RGM-84/UGM-84/AGM-84) has been in service since 1977 with air, ship, and sub-launched versions. It is used by over 30 countries, including India. Key features include all-weather, over-the-horizon capability, low-level sea-skimming trajectory, and active radar guidance. It has a 4.5m length, weighs 526 kg, and carries a 221 kg warhead. It can execute both land-strike and anti-ship missions with a range of 90-240 km using GPS-aided navigation.

According to recent data, China is the country with a growing trade deficit with India, exceeding $100 billion in FY24, making it India’s largest trade deficit partner; this is due to significantly higher imports from China compared to exports to that country. This has raised concerns about market access disparities. Additionally, public sentiment in China is increasingly critical of business relations with India, reflecting a complex interplay of economic and geopolitical factors, including the ongoing border disputes and India’s alignment with the Quad alliance against perceived Chinese aggression.

The Indian Army, along with the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS), holds the Chanakya Defence Dialogue-2024 on October 24-25, 2024 in New Delhi. The event will focus on “Drivers in Nation Building: Fuelling Growth through Comprehensive Security.” Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized a vision for a secure and prosperous India by 2047 at the curtain-raiser event. The dialogue aims to promote discussions, build strategic partnerships, and create actionable insights for national security and development. It will provide a platform for national and international leaders, policymakers, and experts to share their knowledge on security through development.

The Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, launched in 2021, targets the remediation of all legacy landfills in India by 2025-2026. As of now, 474 out of 2,421 legacy landfills have been cleared, reclaiming over 2,617 acres of land for alternate uses such as parks and integrated waste management projects. Cities like Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Pune, and Lucknow are transforming these sites, showcasing the mission’s impact on urban development and environmental sustainability.

Scientists found carbon dioxide and hydrogen peroxide on Pluto’s largest moon, Charon. Charon is half the size of Pluto, measuring 1,214 km across, discovered in 1978. It’s named after the ferryman of dead souls in Greek mythology. Charon’s mass is over one-tenth of Pluto’s, and the two form a double dwarf planet system. The distance between Pluto and Charon is 19,640 km. Both bodies are tidally locked, always facing each other in same side. Charon completes one orbit of Pluto in 6.4 Earth days.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP). The aim is to combat dengue and other Aedes-borne arboviruses like Zika and chikungunya through a coordinated global response. The SPRP will run for over a year, until September 2025. It focuses on five key components: emergency coordination, collaborative surveillance, community protection, safe and scalable care, and access to countermeasures. The SPRP aligns with other global initiatives, including the Global Vector Control Response 2017–2030 and the Global Arbovirus Initiative.

India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, seeks its first-ever ICC title in this event.

Entomologists discovered a new species of potter wasp in Arunachal Pradesh, named Pseumenes siangensis. It belongs to the genus Pseumenes within the subfamily Eumeninae and is mainly found in the Oriental region. These solitary wasps build small, pot-like mud nests for their larvae. India has only reported one other species of this genus, making Pseumenes siangensis a significant addition to the country’s wasp diversity. The species was found in the Upper Siang District and named after Siang Valley, Arunachal Pradesh. At 30.2 mm in length, it has unique features and plays a role in controlling pest populations by feeding on caterpillars and insects.

The Assam government has launched the ‘Nijut Moina’ scheme to combat child marriage and support girl students in pursuing higher studies. The scheme provides monthly stipends: Rs 1,000 for Classes 11-12, Rs 1,250 for degree students, and Rs 2,500 for post-graduate students. To qualify, students must attend classes regularly, demonstrate discipline, perform well in exams, and delay marriage until after completing their post-graduation. This initiative aims to empower girls and promote education in Assam.
