Four Indian cities namely Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai appeared in the list of top 20 sustainable cities, as per the Asia Pacific Sustainability Index 2021.
Knight Frank’s APAC Sustainably Led Cities Index rated 36 cities based on urbanisation pressure, climate risk, carbon emissions and government initiatives. Singapore, Sydney, Wellington, Perth, and Melbourne were the top five green-rated cities. Bengaluru at 14th rank in the region, was the only Indian city to achieve the ‘Gold’ standard category.

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN Habitat) is the United Nations programme for human settlements and sustainable urban development. It was established in 1978 with its headquarters at Nairobi, Kenya.
It has recently released a report World Cities Report 2022, to coincide with the Eleventh Session of the World Urban Forum held at Poland. The report says urban areas are responsible for 70 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.

Punjab has become the first state in the country to pass a resolution against the Agnipath recruitment scheme.
The resolution also said that more than one lakh soldiers from Punjab served in the armed forces of the nation. The house also recommended the state government to take up the matter with the Union government in order to roll back the Agnipath scheme immediately.

The Delhi government introduced new assessment guidelines for school students. Under the new criteria, students will now be assessed for the impact of mindset curricula in their behaviour, along with other scholastic subjects.
It includes Happiness and Deshbhakti curricula for classes 3-8, while students of Class 9 and Class 11 will be assessed for Deshbhakti and Entrepreneurship Mindset Curricula.

NTPC signed a Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Government of Rajasthan to develop 10 GW Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park in Rajasthan.
It aims to achieve the target of 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. NTPC REL is also developing one UMREPP of 4.75 GW capacity in Rann of Kutch, Gujarat.

Domestic rating agency Crisil lowered its real GDP growth forecast for India to 7.3 per cent in FY23 from 7.8 per cent estimated earlier.
It cited the reasons for downward revision to be higher oil prices, slowing of export demand and high inflation. This forecast is in line with the RBI’s estimate of 7.2 real GDP growth for this fiscal year.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz sealed the first Formula One victory of his career in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Sergio Pérez and Lewis Hamilton finished second and third in the tournament respectively. Fernando Alonso, Lando Norris, Mick Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Kevin Magnussen were among the top ten.

Scientists have discovered the world’s largest water-lily belonging to the genus Victoria at Kew Gardens in south-west London.
The species has been named Victoria boliviana, in honour of Bolivian partners in the research. The leaves of the newly discovered waterlily species grow up to three metres. The current record for the largest plant of the species is held by La Rinconada Gardens in Bolivia, with leaves of 3.2 metres.

Students in East Sikkim have reported skin infections after coming in contact with Nairobi flies, also called Kenyan flies or dragon bugs.
It is a species of insect native to East Africa. They are small, beetle-like insects that belong to two species, Paederus eximius and Paederus sabaeus. They are orange and black in colour and when disturbed they release a potent acidic substance called ‘pederin’ that causes burns.

Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in the country to connect One District (ODOP) mart with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform.
The initiative aims to promote open networks for all aspects of exchange of goods and services over digital or electronic networks. After the on-boarding of odopmart.com, the ODOP products will be displayed on all e-commerce portals and apps that are associated with ONDC.
