The All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on poultry breeding, Mannuthy, under the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University (KVASU), bagged the ‘National breed conservation award’ for 2021.
ICAR – National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) presented the award for conservation and research activities on the Tellicherry breed. It is the only registered native chicken breed from the state of Kerala.

Notes:
The newly discovered Begonia gigantic, is claimed to be the world’s largest specimen of a Begonia species.
Begonia is one of the largest plant genera, with over 2050 known species. Though most Begonias are small weeds, this new species grows on slopes along streams at elevation of 450–1400 m. The species are distributed in southern Tibet. The conservation status is ‘Endangered’ as per the IUCN Red List.

Iran has launched a satellite carrier rocket ‘Simorgh’ bearing three research devices into space, as per the country’s media.
‘Simorgh’ translates to ‘Phoenix’ in Iran language. The country has launched the devices at an altitude of 470 kilometres (290 miles). United States unilaterally withdrew from the nuclear deal in May 2018 and re-imposed sanctions against Iran.

China’s Shanghai has maintained its position as having the longest metro rail network in the world by adding two new lines that went into operation recently.
The new lines took the total length of the city’s metro network to 831 km, also bringing the total number of fully automatic driverless metro lines in the city to five.  Shanghai city now includes 508 stations. Shanghai’s Metro network is followed by Beijing, and Delhi was ranked third

Three Indian-origin Canadians have been bestowed with the Order of Canada, which is considered as one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
The three personalities were among the 135 individuals, honoured for their achievements and for promoting bilateral ties between Canada and India.

Jammu and Kashmir is set to become the first Union Territory to have a district-level Good Governance Index.
The Department of administrative reforms and public grievances will carry out this task in association with the Jammu and Kashmir government. The framework will have 58 indicators to assess different aspects of development and district administration such as agriculture, commerce and industry, public safety, public health among others.

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has notified the latest amendments to the Environment (Protection) Act.
As per the notification, all coal and lignite-based thermal power plants (TPPs) should utilise 100 per cent fly ash in an environment friendly manner for making construction sector products. This aims to  reduce the requirement of land for disposing fly ash in ash ponds.

The ‘Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization (WTOAB)’ is a standing body of seven persons to hear appeals in disputes brought on by WTO members.
India has recently appealed against a ruling of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) trade dispute settlement panel. The disputed rule said that the country’s domestic support measures for sugar and sugarcane are inconsistent with global trade norms.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has released draft National Air Sports Policy (NASP) for public feedback.
The policy seeks to propmote India’s potential for air sports and focuses on ensuring international best practices in safety. The vision of the policy is to make India as one of the top air sports nations by 2030.

DRDO observed the 63rd Foundation Day of its establishment on January 01, 2021. DRDO was established in 1958 with 10 laboratories to enhance the research work in Defence sector.
At present, DRDO is working with several areas including aeronautics, combat vehicles, electronics, instrumentation, advanced computing, simulation among others. DRDO Chairperson declared ‘Export’ as the theme of DRDO for 2021.
