Karmi Bot Launched in Kerala Hospital

The Karmi bot became only the latest addition to a series of robots being deployed across Kerala for helping in the fight against COVID-19.

A robot, named Karmi Bot, has been introduced in a government hospital in Ernakulam, Kerala. The robot is to help reduce the physical interaction between the healthcare workers and the COVID-19 patients in the hospital. The robot was presented by Viswasanthi Foundation and was developed by Asimov Robotics under the Kerala Start-up Mission.

Functions of the Robot

The Karmi Bot will help in serving food and medicines to the COVID-19 patients in the hospital. The autonomous robot will also be able to collect trash generated by the patients, perform disinfection functions (UV based and targeted disinfectant spraying) and even enable video calls with the doctors. It can carry a payload of 25kg and reach maximum speeds of 1 m per second.

Other Examples

Earlier, the Nightingale-19, another robot for reducing interactions between the patients and the healthcare professionals was launched in Kerala. Humanoid robots are also being tested in Rajasthan’s hospitals. Robots were used in China’s Wuhan when the pandemic began. Bangkok had repurposed their ‘Ninja Robots’ for serving COVID-19 patients. In South Africa, UV-based disinfecting robots are being used.
