GoI launches “Urban Forest” system
On July 2, 2020, the Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar inaugurate urban forest at Comptroller Auditor General Office in Delhi.
Around 1200 saplings of 59 indigenous species were planted. The main objective of the initiative is to reduce pollution in Delhi.
About Urban Forest
The uniqueness of the forest is that it has artistic, recreational and meditational zones. It also has sitting spaces and watchtowers. The species of trees selected are all best suited to the terrain of the region, soil and climate. These trees require minimal maintenance including very little de-weeding and watering and will be self-sustainable in two years.
The forest has been created in an area of 1 acre. It has the capacity to restore habitat of bees, butterfly, birds and also micro fauna. They are essential for pollination of fruits and crops and also important to maintain a healthy ecosystem
With the Urban Forest being first in the country, several such forests are to be created in government offices all over the country.
