Democratic Republic of Congo: African leaders sign UN-backed peace accord
Regional African leaders have inked a UN-brokered accord which aims to bring peace to the troubled eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Objective: The agreement may lead to the establishment of a special UN intervention brigade in eastern Congo, along with political efforts to bring peace.
- Leaders from Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Republic and South Sudan attended the signing.
- The deal was signed in the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
About 800,000 people have been displaced since the M23 (March 23) rebel group took up arms against the Kinshasa government in May, 2013.
