Delhi HC seeks Government’s response from Govt over use of social networking sites by children below 18
The High Court of Delhi has sought response from the Union Government of India on a plea that questioned how children below the age of 18 were allowed to open an account on social networking sites like Facebook and others. The court also said, “Both Facebook Inc and Google Inc are US-based entities and are hereby impleaded as respondents.
The PIL urges the HC to issue a writ of Mandamus in order to ascertain verification of all existing users and future new members of social networking websites with instructions not to do agreements with children below 18 years. Due to non-verification of users, more than eight crore Facebook users across the world were found to be “fake”, which the website admitted before the US authority.
What prevents under-18 from accessing social networking sites?
- The Indian Majority Act, the Indian Contract Act and the Information and Technology Act don’t permit a child below 18 years to open an account on the social networking sites.
