World Bicycle Day: ‘Fit India Freedom Rider Cycle Rally’

Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports has launched a nationwide ‘Fit India Freedom Rider Cycle Rally’ on 3rd June 2022 from Major Dhyan Chand Stadium, Delhi. This rally was launched on the occasion of World Bicycle Day 2022. A distance of 7.5 km was covered by the Union Minister along with 750 young cyclists during the cycle rally that commenced from the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium.

Why is World Bicycle Day observed?

This day is observed on 3rd June across the world. This day is observed to spread awareness regarding the benefits of using a bicycle. This day highlights the longevity, uniqueness, and versatility of the bicycle. This day is being observed since 2018 after a resolution was passed by the United Nations, during the UNGA’s 72nd Regular Session.

What is the aim of this day?

This day highlights the benefits of using the bicycle which is an affordable, simple, environmentally fit, clean, and sustainable means of transportation. On this day a number of seminars and activities are organised across the world to encourage people to take up bicycling as a sustainable mode of transportation and for fitness.

Why were bicycle rallies held in India on World Bicycle Day?

Over 9.68 lakh kilometres were covered by around 1.29 lakh young cyclists through various proposed bicycle rallies that were organized on the occasion of World Bicycle Day 2022. In India, bicycle rallies were held with the aim of encouraging and motivating people to adopt cycling in their daily lives. The rallies were also organized to generate awareness about physical fitness and other health disorders such as stress, obesity, anxiety, etc. The cycle rallies across the country on the occasion of World Bicycle Day have been organized as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
